SCORING
The scoring system is quite simple (honestly!) and is designed to encourage everyone to attain their best possible time. In each race, the overall Male and Female winner will score 1000 points. All other results are then calculated with reference to their winning times as follows:
Winning Time/Your Time * 1000
So, if the winning time is 4 hours and your time is 5 hours then you will score 4/5 * 1000 or 800 points.
The difference between this system and a "placings" system which awards, say, 100 points to first place and 95 points to second place etc is that you are encouraged to race to the line. If your time is seconds behind the person in front, the point difference will be minimal.
So, the maximum possible score for the overall series is 4000 points. In the unlikely event that more than one person scores a maximum, the overall championship will be determined by taking the next best scores (above 4 races)
You can keep an eye out on your scores by clicking on the "Leader Board" tab on the right hand menu bar
The Championships Explained.....
The Championship consists of 12 races grouped into three distance classes – short (26-35miles), medium (36-45miles) and long (46 miles and above). There are 4 races in each distance class.
Simply by completing races in the series you will get a score in the Championshipbut you need to register first to get your name on the leaderboard. To be eligible for prizes and awards you will also need to register - see the right hand side of your brouser for registration details. This is free.
IMPORTANT: If you have previously registered for the series in another year you will be automatically put onto the next years leader board once you have done your first race in that year. You are already eligeable for web spot ptizes and competitions each month!
There are several ways to be a winner in the UK Ultra-running Championship:
· Overall winners - the main category counts your 4 best scores across the series. These have to include one at each distance. Prizes to top 3 men and women in seniors, V50's and V60's
· High Points Winner - fancy doing all 12? This category features prizes for the highest point scorers across all 12 races in the series. You don't have to do every race to qualify but the more you do the more points you can get. Everyone who completes all 12 races in the series will receive a souvenir “Grand Slam” top. In 2006 only one of these was awarded for this significant achievement, to Julian Brown and 2007 saw Si Berry try, but injury got the better of his legs, 2008 saw Stuart Walker and Karen McDonald complete all 12 races, in 2009 we had quite a few take on the challenge and 4 completed it - Julie Gardener, Paul Dickens, Tim Whittaker and Nick Ham and in 2010 we had only one again – this time we saw Dick Scroop finally (he nearly did all of them in 2009 too) get round all 12 and he’s a V60 (well done Dick a superb effort for us all to only try and follow), 2011 saw Nick Ham do his second Grand Slam and he was joined by Gregory Crowley who also took top prize for most points in the champs - take the challenge this year and try all 12 races for that "Grand Slam". Prizes for top 3 male and female and all your races count.
· Teams – there will be prizes for top 3 teams in male and female categories. You don't have to run together but the top 3 scorers in you team count to the team prizes/score
· Individual Races – there will be great prizes for the first 3 men and women home at each race in the series plus further spot prizes at each race. So, you don’t have to be at the leading edge of the race to walk away with some great prizes from our Sponsors.
· Spot prizes - throughout the year there will be lots and lots of lucky spot prize winners through this website. To be eligible you simply have to register for the Championships. If you have registered previously then you will be registered automatically for this year.
· About the crew behind Runfurther - we are voluntary and we put thses champs on as we love the sport, if you see us at races struggling to put the flags and banners up in time please help! We may be racing as well!!! The scoring and updates will be done as soon as we can after each race but it is not our main jobs (although the hours sometimes make it feel like a job!) so please be patient - we get there in the end!!!
We get sponsors in to cover the prizes for you lot and the website and other running costs for the champs.
See you at the races...
Cheers
Karen, Mark and Si (The Runfurther Crew)
