A 53 mile multi-terrain ultra run along the West Highland Way from Milngavie to Tyndrum
The Challenge
To complete the course which will run along the Southern section of the West Highland Way (from Milngavie to Tyndrum) within the 15 hour time limit. This year the race will run on the 26th of April which should give runners time to recover for the full West Highland Way Race. The 2008 entry form is now available here. Unlike the West Highland Way race or the Devil o' the Highlands race, a support crew is not essential although entrants may prefer to have their own crew, particularly if they are new to this distance. Instead, the organisers will distribute labelled drop bags (prepared by entrants) to checkpoints along the race route. These should contain anything that might conceivably need en-route. Typically these will contain drinks, energy bars and other snacks but may also include clothing. The organisers will endeavour to transport all unused items to the finish line at Tyndrum so it's important that bags are clearly labelled.
The race Start will be at 6.00am at Milngavie Railway Station and the finish will be just before crossing the A82 opposite Brodie's Store in Tyndrum prior to 9.00pm.
The Rationale
The "Highland Fling" will be an important multi-terrain ultra run in its own right and will add another event to a growing calendar of Scottish "Ultra" races. It completes a logical trio of races along the West Highland Way, the DOTH from Tyndrum to Fort William, the full WHW race and now the Fling from Milngavie to Tyndrum.
It will also give an important training opportunity to runners preparing for the "West Highland Way Race" which is held seven weeks later. (2008 date is Saturday/Sunday June 21/22).
By starting in Milngavie, close to the largest centres of population, and finishing the same day, the event minimises the costs of participation for the competitors.
Jez Bragg is the new course winner of the Highland Fling, this event covers the southern section of the West highland way from Milngavie to Tyndrum in under 15 hours.
Lucy Colquhoun, in her first ever ultra, took almost 1 hour and 45 minutes off of last year's ladies winning time.
