I took up running about 6 years ago when I moved back to Edinburgh. I'd been doing a little bit of jogging (i.e. 20 mins every week), when I got introduced to a marathon runner - pretty daunting prospect to go training with her but she was very patient and built up my confidence to do my first race. Then I fell in with a triathlon crowd, did more running and racing through that and gravitated towards hills so joined Carnethy, Scotland's biggest hill running club. I also concentrated on road running for a year or so to tackle the marathon and improve my times. Ultra running was a happy mistake - I didn't set out planning to do long runs but went on a social run which was billed as 28 miles, ended up being 36 and yet was still good fun! Got persuaded into doing a 53, then a 95 and it went from there...
My main running companion is my dog - he's accompanied me on most of my long runs and on regular training routes but is now becoming more selective i.e. if it's not a nice hill or beach run with the prospect of chasing some grouse/pheasant/rabbit he won't come.
My day job is deskbound but luckily allows me to run most lunchtimes or to and from work. I live by the sea so am fortunate to have beautiful beaches to run on and some nearby hills.
In terms of running preferences I fall into a slightly odd category of 'trail runner with a love of tarmac'. I love running on trails and tracks through the hills, but also really enjoy the comparative speed of the flat road. I hate steep descents and am somewhat 'navigationally challenged'!
Achievements would be: West Highland Way female record holder (2007) 17:16
CCC 2007: 2nd f
Highland Fling female record holder and winner 2007, 2008 (8:10:03)
Lairig Ghru female record holder (3:32:38)
My marathon PB is 2:51 at London in 2006.
The series this year: I've only done Osmotherley, having recently joined the team, and plan to do the High Peak 40. I'd like to recce the routes for the others so that I can have a good go at them next year.
The Vasque kit: I love the lightweight material of the tops and they are well fitted and designed. I'll probably wear them more in winter, as I tend to train in minimal kit so if they were to bring out a crop top or tight vest that would be good... The shoes so far seem to be great, very good grip, clean easily and are comfortable. The laces do tend to come undone - maybe a slightly slippery material? I'll pin them to my shoes for racing though.
